The Sherborne, also known as Sherborne House, a Grade 1 listed Georgian Mansion, has undergone extensive and sensitive restoration to create a landmark destination for the arts.
In December last year, I was contacted to discuss the planting scheme for the garden. The brief was to create a ‘winter garden’ in the existing beds which had already been created by the architect Stefan Pitman of Spase.
The ‘winter garden scheme’ using dogwoods and silver birch was the vision of the late Michael Cannon – the mastermind at the heart of this project. Many of these plants were already on order so the brief was very specific however Sally Cannon expanded it to include more year round seasonal interest.
All the planting plans had to be completed by the first week in January for the team to approve. Then Castle Gardens (of The Gardens Group) started sourcing the plants ready for planting in February / March since the venue was having an pre-opening event on 19th April. Fortunately I like my job so I didn’t mind working over Christmas!
It has been a fabulous project for those long dark winter days and a huge privilege to work with such a lovely team at The Sherborne and Castle Gardens. I look forward to seeing the plants establish.
