The Sherborne (Sherborne House)

A few weeks ago, just before the chilly snap, Sally Cannon invited me to meetup with her to walk around the garden.

Sally’s email was full of joy “The garden has enhanced the House and I am so pleased that it is maturing and the plants chosen fit in so well. We never stop receiving accolade for the gardens”.

When I visited on 5th November the Geum were in full flush of flower as were Abelia, Salvia, Penstemon whilst flowers persisted on Hydrangea, Aster frikartii ‘Monch’, Penesitum, Hebe and throughout the pictorial meadow.

The many evergreens are working to provide a range of textures and colours, notably the different coloured Carex, Libertia, ferns, Liriope and Mahonia ‘Soft Caress’. Soon the colourful dogwood stems will come into their own set off against the white stems of the silver birch trees.

I was most impressed by the growth and establishment of the plantings, the Carex, Liriope and Viola cornuta were all surrounded by offshoots.

The beds are mulched with ‘Blooming Amazing’, a peat free mulch made in the West Country and the plants seem to be loving it.

The gardens are looked after by volunteers, they receive guidance from myself and Mike Burks from Castle Gardens.

The volunteers are doing an amazing job and recently planted bulbs throughout the site under Mike Burk’s guidance and according to my planting plans – I look forward to spring already!
